Smile: A Graphic Novel
by Raina Telgemeier

View in Library Catalog

book cover

Raina Telgemeier took me back to the misery of Junior High and new braces! and this graphic novel/ memoir works just as well with women my age as with middle schoolers/junior high school students past in their middle aged years who might find, as I did, that all those feelings I remembered having at that time in my Life were shared! Raina's graphic novels for self-information even now as that middle aged woman - whose own daughter experienced a different middle grade years Life and still amazes me - my daughter in her 20's is legions beyond me even now!

Very sad tale of child abuse but thankfully the author was rescued from it!

The Country Of The Blind

I liked the concept of this book, which wove the author's research on blindness and the disability activism movement with his own personal story about losing his eyesight gradually due to a congenital disease. I appreciated portions of this book - some of the anecdotes were interesting and helped me better understand the perspective of someone who is living with low vision. But, at the same time, this was a story of a white, male, wealthy, heretofore able-bodied person adjusting to losing vision. Don't get me wrong - the author did a good job acknowledging his privilege of being in this scenario, but as someone who has read other books about disability, I didn't find the narrative as compelling. Probably harsh to say, but I didn't connect with the narrative as much as I would have thought. 2.5 stars.

I loved this book. However, It is for younger kids. It is about mice and a dog. The dog comes erupts from a volcano and destroys the world. It is just an innocent dog, but to the mice, it is a scary, annoying monster. I would recommend this book for young readers.

Camino Ghosts

Pretty good, although not his usual compelling legal thriller. However, the subject matter was interesting and I enjoyed the characters.

OCME

Interesting history about the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, MD. Thought it would be more of a memoir, but a lot of time was dedicated to talking about the formation of the OCME and I found it a little bit boring.

I really enjoyed how this book dives into the messy lives of a family, blending humor with some pretty heavy moments. That said, I found the number of subplots a bit overwhelming at times, making it hard to keep track of everyone’s story.

Black Panther Book 6

It was a very good book and was truly a exciting, excellent, and an exquisite book to read. Feels both fresh and exciting, crafting a distinct identity that stands out against the many other books on the stands. In the book, there was a lot going on and it was kind of hard to connect the pictures to the text. But overall, the book was very good and I look forward to reading the next parts of the books.
